A full time three-year position as PhD Research Fellow is available at the Institute for Clinical Medicine (KLINMED). The position is located at the Department of Cancer Genetics, Institute for Cancer Research OUS and is funded by UiO:Life Science and KLINMED. The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training program at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo. The admission must be approved within three months from starting the grant. The PhD in Norway has limited course work, focusing on producing research papers of high quality, which are expected to be published or submitted before the PhD thesis is defended. Ability to visualize, analyze and integrate imaging and molecular experimental data will be developed. This position is part of a substantial investment in the computational life sciences by the University of Oslo and the Oslo University Hospital, through the programme UiO:Life Science. In particular, this position is part of the UiO: Life Science so called convergence environment PERCATHE, Personalised Cancer Therapy, see http://www.uio.no/english/research/strategic-research-areas/life-science/research/convergence-environments/percathe/ The programme PERCATHE will develop new, powerful and cutting-edge methods to build an innovative and practicable pipeline for individualised precision treatment of cancer to provide individual cancer patients with advanced disease with the best personalised cure in the future. Differently from other approaches, which aim for a fine stratification of patients, PERCATHE’s goal is to provide (i) drug synergy predictions based on genomic profile of patients, (ii) mathematical models of cancer multiscale processes and (iii) patient based inference of cancer characterising parameters, exploiting medical imaging and genomics. (iv) test the ex vivo drug sensitivity of cancer patients’ cells. Focus is on breast and lung cancers where PERCATHE has strong clinical collaborators.
Job descriptionThe project will establish a clinical pipeline for individualized precision treatment of cancer that will take into account individual variability in genetic profiles, transcriptional activity, proteome, microenvironment, macroscopic features, clinical condition and life expectancy. Analysis will include 3D quantitative biomarkers of underlying tumor microenvironment obtained from MRI and PET. Output parameters from the image analysis will together with molecular data be essential input to the modelling activity in the PERCATHE-project. The appointed candidate will have full operational responsibility for her/his research within PERCATHE program, with supervision from leading experts in molecular imaging, genomics and clinical cancer research. He/she will be responsible to:
- extract histological, physiologic, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics characteristics of solid tumors from various types of medical images, including MRI and PET, of cancer patients
- learn, apply existing and develop new analytical pipelines for identifying genomic markers which influence individual parameters measurable through images
- identify associations between imaging data and –omics data in order to develop algorithms for personalized cancer therapy
- develop experimental models to validate the estimated algorithms on the basis of extensive experiments in cell lines and animal models to assess how different molecular and histological features are reflected in the images
Qualification requirementsCandidates with a Master’s degree within physics, mathematics, molecular medicine or other life sciences are encouraged to apply. Candidates to the position will have some experience and/or clear potentials to initiate, develop and manage the scientific project. Candidates must demonstrate team spirit in developing their research, with strong interpersonal skills. Experience with some programming languages (Matlab, Python, R, C++) is necessary, while knowledge of image processing and quantification software is an advantage.
